How it works

Specially formulated with cross-linked sodium hyaluronate (0.4%) so that your eye drops stay in place for longer where they are needed, and you can get on with life with fewer interruptions.

Sodium hyaluronate explained

It’s a type of moisturiser, known as a humectant, naturally found in the body. Humectants work by attracting moisture – you can think of them a bit like a super sponge! Sodium hyaluronate occurs naturally in our synovial fluid – it’s the thick liquid that lubricates your joints and keeps them moving smoothly – and in the eyes and skin. Sodium hyaluronate is used widely, including in the treatment of ulcers, wounds and in skincare and cosmetics.

Look for cross-linked

Some eye drops contain sodium hyaluronate, but this is not the same. Ocutears Hydro+ is formulated with the cross-linked version. The “cross-linked” part means that the molecules are connected in a special way that makes it better at staying in place where it’s needed.

You’ll never find preservatives in any of the Ocutears® formulations. That’s important. Find out why you should opt for preservative-free eye drops in our FAQ.

Frequently asked questions

About Ocutears® Hydro+

Artificial tears mimic real tears. You can get symptoms of dry eye when your tears evaporate too fast, you don’t produce enough tears or the balance of them (they’re made up of water, oil and mucus) isn’t quite right. Artificial tears work to boost the quality and quantity of your natural tears.

Ocutears Hydro+ also contains the ingredient cross-linked sodium hyaluronate (0.4%) which works to keep the eye drops in place where they are needed.

That means relief is long-lasting and you may not need to apply as often as alternative eye drops (without cross-linked sodium hyaluronate).

It’s a type of moisturiser, known as a humectant, naturally found in the body. Humectants work by attracting moisture – you can think of them a bit like a super sponge!  It’s used widely, including in the treatment of ulcers, wounds and in skincare and cosmetics.

The “cross-linked” part means that the molecules are connected in a special way that makes it better at staying in place where it’s needed. This means the symptom relief lasts longer, compared to the non-cross-linked version.

They are similar but not the same. Sodium hyaluronate is more stable than hyaluronic acid and is less prone to oxidation. However, sometimes companies don’t distinguish between the two ingredients on product labels. Ocutears Hydro+ contains cross-linked sodium hyaluronate, a different form of sodium hyaluronate.

Many eye drops contain a preservative used to prolong the shelf life of the solution, but a recent study suggests that it can actually make dry eye worse. That’s because preservatives are a type of detergent and break up the oil part of the tear film. With long term use, it can cause unwanted side effects like allergic reaction, redness, irritation and inflammation.

Yes. Ocutears Hydro+ artificial tears can be used for comfort and lubrication even when using contact lenses.

There is good evidence that artificial tears improve symptoms of dry eye disease within a month of regular use, but signs generally take several months to improve. Consistency is key!

You may find that certain things in your environment, or activities, trigger your dry eye or make it worse. Some common culprits include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Car heating vents
  • Smoky rooms
  • High altitude or dry air
  • Wind
  • Excessive digital screen use

Find out more about dry eye triggers and lifestyle changes.

If you’ve tried lifestyle changes along with artificial tears and you do not see any improvement, make sure you see your doctor. They will work with you to find out the cause of your symptoms and provide recommendations.

Administer 1 or 2 drops in each eye one or more times a day or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist. Always make sure you read the label and apply as directed.

Ocutears Hydro+ can also relieve discomfort after eye surgery. Make sure you speak to your doctor for further guidance on post-surgery treatment.

Yes, but always check with your doctor first and use as directed. If you have more than one type of drop, wait 5 minutes after the first before you use the second. If you’re using an ointment, apply the drops first (ointments can keep the eye drops from being absorbed).

If your main symptoms of dry eye are redness and sensitivity, or you’re looking for a fresh feeling in the eyes, then Alo+ is a great choice. Find out more about Alo+ here.

However, if you have more general dry eye symptoms such as grittiness, soreness, itchy, burning or a heavy, tired or sandy feel, as well as watery eyes, then choose Hydro+ or Cationorm.

If your symptoms are caused by discomfort after eye surgery, overexposure to sunlight, air-conditioning or digital screen use, then opt for Hydro+

If you’ve tried other eye drops in the past and haven’t got the relief you needed, then Cationorm can be a great choice. This is because it works in a different way to other eye drops. It uses ionic technology to lock its positively charged formula to the negatively charged surface of the eye.

Once opened, Ocutears Alo+ lasts for 90 days. After this, you should discard the bottle and if needed replace it with a new one.

Touching your eye with the bottle dropper increases your risk of infection. If you do develop symptoms of an eye infection, see your doctor as soon as possible so that it can be treated. You should discard your bottle of Ocutears Alo+ and replace it if the dropper has touched your eye or anything else (for example, fallen on the floor) to avoid the risk of infection.

Ocutears Hydro+ can be used up to 90 days from after its first opened. If you use it after this date, you increase your risk of infection.

Yes, you can apply 1 – 2 drops in your eye one or more times as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
